My apology for I have not blogged anything for over a year. Indeed, I feel very bad. But now I am back. And if you read this, I promise I will write more about my leaf journey and more important articles about art. After all, new year of 2019 is just around the corner. And what a perfect timing to start something positive and intentional right? So here I am.
As an artist you probably having a hard time to pick that one subject to paint regularly. We the artists, love to paint everything that might intrigue us. And usually we love to paint flowers, fashion art, pets, architectural, scenery, etc. And other things that interest us. I do too.
There is positive and negative about sticking to one subject. You might not be as popular as you were in instagram like before. In fact you might loose followers for an unknown reasons. May be because your feed are not as pretty as before. I am not sure. But it is happening to me. And I am sticking to what truth to my heart. I am following what deep inside me wanted to paint. I can’t change or scatter all over the place with my subject. That I know for a fact. I want people to know me for what I really good at; the leaves!
Now let’s see what I have done so far. I have done; loose floral, architecture, fashion illustration, wedding bouquet. Yes. I wanted to paint everything. I was quickly bored with my subject matter before I start to even paint them properly. Or at least stick a round a little longer to improve the techniques.
But then, came a long leaves!
With in a month next January 2019, it will be exactly a year a go I started to paint leaves. How fast the time went by! Now I feel proud of myself. I came a long way in that journey that I can say I am good (I am not saying I am “an expert” and far from it) at painting leaves. In fact a few days a go one of my sweet instagram followers commented that I am “the leaves queen”. Yes, it took me almost a year to get that title. Thank you (I think it was) @loveprints.pl !
So what have I learned? A lot.
I gained confidence at painting a large scale leaf.
I learned new techniques.
I have a lot of leaves collection that has stories behind them and, from travelling to the other side of the globe to find them. It was fun.
Now people knew me as the leaf lady. And I am proud of that. My dedication paid off.
So let me back track why I am talking about sticking to one subject matter? It is important because you will master in painting that one particular subject. Rather than paints many but only gets okay results.
When you commit to your subject you will have a lot to talk about. Your experiences about this subject has expanded. Like a story about from travelling to collect the leaves that you love so much, why that particular leaf, why you want to paint them, and imagine them as the end result and how people should have your leaf art in their home, etc. This is a journey about your leaf. Your art story, “the leaf” as your subject. Rather than paints something today, different the next day and different again the day after that does not mean anything. And soon will be forgotten. I am not saying that you should paint that one subject the whole time. Of course you can change a little here and there, but don’t forget that one subject matter that you love most to paint. Keep coming back to it. Be good at it. And create a journey and story around it.
And that’s what I am talking about.
